HISTORY;
The controllers of earth, fire, water, and air were once seen as gods and were worshipped as such. Despite their normal outward appearance, these people had the ability to control nature. These powers were considered sacred; it saved civilizations from collapsing, people from starving, and wars from beginning. Elementals, as they were called, were precious to any city. Families hoped their children would inherit these gifts for an Elemental was promised an easy life.
Though, soon a group of Elementals became greedy for power. They believed that the normal human was below them. The Shadoe were formed on that belief. Their groups terrorized human villages and demanded power to be handed over to them from kings. Over years, the power that the Shadow Knights possessed grew. That was until a rebel group formed, a mixture of Elementals and humans fighting side by side, simply called the Underground. The Underground managed to defeat the Shade, bringing down the dark group of Elementals once and for all.
Fast forward to the present, it has been centuries since that massive war. Since those dark times, human distrust of Elementals grew to a boiling point. To soothe the troubles in the public, the government hid the Elementals away in one place, Blackwood Hollow. Once out of sight, the existence of Elementals became unknown to the public. To this day, only a select few are aware of Blackwood Hollow and Elementals. Those people are sworn to protect the public from these unnatural beings and make sure the Elementals stay in their place.
ELEMENTALS;
Is a name for a person that possesses the power to control a single element, whether it is earth, fire, water, or air. The powers are linked to a recessive gene almost completely bred out of the general public. While in Blackwood Hollow it is rare that a child is born without an element. Despite powers not taking effect until early childhood, often from birth the element the infant possesses can be assumed based on the parent’s abilities.
Elementals come in all shapes and sizes, none of which is affected by their element. Though, it is common belief that the element does affect the personality. It is common, but not always the case, which based on the element, personality can be determined early on. Fire Elementals are often described as ambitious, fierce, competitive, and hot-headed. Earth Elementals often are quite grounded, serious, stubborn, and loyal. Water Elementals are emotional, peacekeepers, and intelligent. Finally, Air Elementals are believed to be flighty, imaginative, calm, and gentle. These are simply stereotypes and not always apply to an Elemental.
Aside from the basic elements, earth, fire, water, and air, some Elementals specialize in a subcategory of these elements. The most common specialties would be ice, heat, rock, and lightning, each formed from a person possessing one of the original elements. These specialties are hard to manage and there is rarely an Elemental with a natural ability for these.
BLACKWOOD HOLLOW;
Located in the most northern tip of Michigan, it is the appointed home of Elementals. Blackwood Hollow is surrounded by several hundred acres of forest and a ten foot high fence, cutting it off from the rest of civilization. Elementals live in bunkhouses, which usually contain fifty or so apartments each. In total, twenty of these bunkhouses are spread out across Blackwood Hollow. These bunkhouses often resemble prisons on the outside, squat, and gray bricked. On the inside, furniture and appliances are brought in from nearby towns.
Life in Blackwood Hollow is facilitated by the Guard. These are humans hired by the government to keep the Elementals in line. At first, the Guard and the Elementals got along and there was peace. Though, over time the Guard became corrupt and treated the Elementals poorly. It is common to hear stories of part of the Guard brutally beating an Elemental person if caught out after curfew or found stealing from a store. Their punishments are cruel at best and may punish for absolutely no reason. Most Elementals avoid making contact with the Guard.
There is a single school, Blackwood Academy, situated in the center of Blackwood Hollow. It is for children from ages five to seventeen. Supplies are transported from the surrounding cities and it is required that every Elemental child attends the Academy. The curriculum is similar to a typical school, mathematics, literature, science, and language, with a few exceptions such as classes on how to control one’s element. Teachers are often humans hired from outside Blackwood Hollows or Elementals that were exceptional in their subject throughout school.
PLOT;
It has been centuries since the fall of the Shade. The memory of the dark times had faded into the background. Life went on in Blackwood Hollow for years at a time without a single mention of the Shadow Knights. That was, until rumors started bubbling to the surface. These rumors spoke of the rebuilding of the Shade, only supported by the mysterious deaths of the Guard and Elementals alike.
Due to these mysterious murders, the Guard is cracking down on the Elemental population as panic spreads. Despite searches, the Guard keeps coming up with nothing, no sign of any murderer. How long will the Guard be able to keep this situation from public eye? Will the Shade gain enough power to abolish the Guard and wreak havoc on the rest of the world? What will be your part in all of this?
THE GUARD; Easily distinguished by their pale gray jumpsuits and bright red caps, they patrol the streets of Blackwood Hollow and make sure that the Elementals stay in line. Each member is equipped with a small handgun, an oxygen tank, and a communication device. Their uniforms are fireproof and waterproof to protect from any attack from a Blackwood Hollow. Guard members are also not allowed to patrol on their own. The Captain encourages groups of three or four at a time to patrol the city. A Guard member alone is at a greater risk of being attacked.
Guard members are also required to check in with superiors every half an hour to confirm nothing has gone wrong. If a member does not call in or respond to a call, they can be tracked down by a small pin located in the breast pocket. From there, Guard members in trouble can be located from the nearest tower.
